13 Common Wedding Planning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Overthinking the little things

Every bride has her own idea of what a “perfect” wedding is. But ask yourself this, “Is there really such a thing as perfect?” Once the date is set, the venue is booked, and the suppliers are paid, go easy on yourself and all the other details. Little hiccups happen here and there, but there’s no need to stress over it!

Not prioritizing yourself enough

Along with the idea of a “perfect” wedding, some brides also fall prey to wedding trends and what the influencers are doing for their own big day nowadays. Before going into the Pinterest rabbit hole, list down your personal priorities first. What matters to you the most? Is it a laidback, casual wedding where people can lounge? Eco-friendly decor? Or is it a totally energetic after-party? Put your non-negotiables and wishlist first.

Buying the dress before choosing the venue

Venues and surroundings are a good factor to consider when buying your wedding dress. If you’re having a beach wedding where the weather is warmer, a dress with a light and breezy fabric will keep you feeling fresh. If you’re having a formal celebration in a hotel ballroom with all the gilded glamour, you might want to wear a ballgown that matches the vibe of the place rather than something that is low key.

Limiting your wedding dress options

Following up on the previous point, don’t forget that you can still wear any dress that you feel comfortable and beautiful in. If you want to wear a pink dress, go for it! If you want something with floral prints, go for it! Consult a fashion designer if you need more ideas. You don’t need to be limited to what’s traditional. Have fun with your fashion because it’s your big day after all!

Making plans before setting a budget

Let the budget be your guide. The last thing you want is to end up overspending or in debt after the wedding. Before you book a supplier, make sure you are able to allocate enough budget for their services. Plan out how you’re going to navigate your wedding fund and how much you’ll each contribute before making a downpayment.

Falling for crash diets

A bride just wants to look good for the photos, and we’re all for that! But what we want to remind you of, dear bride, is to stay hydrated and have a well-balanced diet. Juice and broth cleanses are good for gut health, but before you try any of these methods, be sure these are safe and suited for your dietary needs. You shouldn’t be going on crash diets that don’t satisfy your body’s nutritional requirements. Being healthy is still the best beauty secret above all!

Having guests wait a long time before eating

Ever attended a wedding where there was an almost 2-hour wait before you could line up for the buffet? Not so fun, right? While you’re taking post-ceremony photos and touching up your hair and makeup, fill the gap with entertainment and activities for the guests. You could have photo areas, cocktails and appetizers, food stands, or live entertainment.

Not eating during the wedding

We’ve heard of many stories where couples don’t get to enjoy the food at their own wedding because they’re too busy with everything going on around them. On your big day, eat a hearty breakfast, ask a bridesmaid or your MOH to carry a water bottle for you, and make sure to EAT! You wouldn’t want to faint or get dizzy when the party hasn’t even started yet. Hire a coordinator to take care of the wedding day itself, so you can focus on the celebration.

Not being careful enough with your rings

Although diamonds are the hardest and sturdiest stones out there, there are still instances where they can chip. For example, if you accidentally hit your hand on a hard surface. Take care of your precious ring (and your investment) by being mindful. You can wear it as a necklace if your job requires you to do labor with your hands or if you just want to keep it safe.

Doing last minute facial treatments

Always do treatments at least 3 to 6 months ahead of your big day. Never one to two weeks before because who knows how your skin will react? Don’t experiment with products you haven’t used to keep your skin healthy and irritation-free come your wedding day.

Not having a backup plan if it rains

We know how unpredictable the weather in the Philippines is. It could be sunny in the morning, then a torrential downpour follows in the afternoon. Have a plan B in place. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, make sure there’s an indoor option where you can easily transfer your event should it rain. You can also opt to have tents and provide umbrellas for your guests.

You don’t make wiggle room for extra fees

When you set your budget, allocate for extra charges such as on-the-day delivery fees and/or gratuities. It’s a good idea to have petty cash for any unexpected expense that may arise leading up to the wedding or on the day itself.

Feeling obligated to satisfy what everyone else wants

Wedding planning tends to be a family affair in the Philippines. Parents and other relatives will usually have a say about what weddings “should” look like. Try to strike a balance between what your family expects and what you want. But end of the day, it’s still your wedding. Make decisions that will make both you and your partner happy!
