Learning how to mix and match your clothes is truly a skill, so now that Chynna has entered her bridal era, she’s bringing her enthusiasm and wide knowledge about fashion to find her dream wedding dress.
We talked to Chynna to gain some more of her useful and inspiring style tips in the search for THE DRESS. Brides-to-be, get ready to take some notes!
Apart from silhouettes, knowing what shade or tone of white looks best on you is one of the bridal dress lessons Chynna imparts. Yes, white comes in a slew of different shades. From the warm creams to iridescent pearl, there’s a shade of white out there that will make you look just radiant. “Try on different dresses in different shades to find the perfect tone of white for you,” shares Chynna.
Much like makeup, figuring out what shade of white works for you has something to do with your undertone. For cooler undertones, bright white hues usually complement you well. Meanwhile, warmer undertones may suit creams and beige. However, the best way to know is to try on as many dresses in various tones of white so you can compare!
If you’re going for a custom dress, Chynna recommends searching for designers who can professionally execute the style you want. The same principle may apply even for bridal boutiques that offer ready-to-wear gowns. Some brands may be experts at beading or detailing, while others take pride in structure or fit. It’s good to remember that every designer and every brand has their own specialty and uniqueness.
“It’s safer to go to someone who specializes in the specific technique you’re looking for whether that’s draping, beading, etc.,” says Chynna, a handy tip to make sure that you’ll be getting your desired output.
As we get older and wiser, our preferences also change especially as we become more aware of different types of clothing and how we want to present ourselves. Once upon a time, when she was still a teenager, Chynna’s dream dress was the Vera Wang gown Kate Hudson wore in the movie, Bride Wars. Just to give you an idea, that bridal gown in the movie was a strapless tulle ballgown with a sweetheart neckline and a purple ribbon around the waist as the accent. Very romantic and feminine.
“Now that I’m in my twenties, my taste has definitely changed, and I imagine myself in something more clean and sleek, but still with that fun girlishness,” says Chynna.
We say this all the time: Stay true to your personal style. You don’t have to undergo a drastic makeover just for your wedding. The look that you will honestly be happy with is the look that reflects who you are and is true to YOU! Identify what you love most about clothing, what cuts or silhouettes make you feel confident and comfy, and what colors you gravitate towards.
Chynna is one such bride who wants to make sure her wedding dress represents her personal style, “I like to wear fun colors and patterns but in pieces that are in sleek, structured silhouettes. Applying that to my wedding gown means playing with different textures like lace, beads, 3D appliqués but keeping the silhouettes very simple and straightforward.”
Book your bridal dress fitting appointments, explore various ateliers, and try, try, try! Even if you end up opting for a custom gown in the end, you’ll at least learn what you like and what you don’t like by trying on different dresses. Take it from Chynna, “It’s always fun trying on different clothes, but it’s an especially enlightening experience trying on wedding gowns. I’ve learned what silhouettes work for me, and what shades of white look best on my skin. With every trip to a designer, I learn something new!”
We hope these insights from fashionista Chynna Lim help you on your quest for THE DRESS, bride-to-be! Tell us in the comments, what are YOU looking for in a wedding dress?
