What's Your Love Story?

Martine: Cliff and my cousin Georgina (who is also my business partner and closest friend) were co-hosts before on Channel V. Cliff moved to Asia to pursue TV hosting and I was living in LA working for American Apparel. When I moved to Manila, he had just left Manila so we just missed each other. We met when he visited briefly and fell in love over a nine-hour phone call pretty much. Five years later we’re still doing the long distance thing as a married couple. A very modern romance!

What details did you want for your wedding day, and how did you put it all together?
Martine: We broke down everything we love and hate about weddings and did our own thing. A long ceremony was out of the question. We wanted it short, sweet, and intimate, and everything had to have a personal touch.

Martine: We had a two-day celebration. Friday was the welcome dinner with an all-pink theme (Cliff’s idea because he knows how much I love pink). We had a table of our favorite snacks from around the world. We flew in a ton of Momofuku Milkbar cookies and crackpies from New York, along with some low brow snacks, and had an abundance of grazing tables and snacks, great music, and lots of alcohol.

Martine: We wanted to treat all of our guests to the same weekend we had when we got engaged, so we rented out the entire resort and treated our closest 150 friends and family to a beautiful weekend together.

Martine: Since the stage was minimal and plexi-glass and all you can see is the ocean and sky, I wanted a gown that would look cloud-like. I wanted to look like myself, so I kept my hair down with minimal makeup, the same as I do normally. For my reception gown, I wanted something a bit more playful so I chose a beautiful nude crystal-embellished Dana Harel gown with a Jennifer Behr crown.

"I wanted to look like myself, so I kept my hair down with minimal makeup, the same as I do normally."

Martine: We wanted it to be minimal and tasteful, but still have some glam elements. We had a plexi-glass stage overlooking the infinity pool and ocean at the same spot we got engaged in. Our flowers were flown in from California and were really beautiful as well.

How was your experience planning a wedding overseas, and what advice can you give to brides who are doing the same?

Martine: No issue at all coordinating overseas. When you work with great people, it’s a breeze. I had the best wedding planner in the world–Amanda Tirol, and Alila Villas Uluwatu was a dream to work with. Find a venue that is special to you. The more personal a wedding is, the more magical the experience becomes.
